Essay:-1
MALAYALAM CINEMA YESTERDAY AND TODAY
In
Ancient days,Malayalam cinema was merely story telling.Still,it was much better than the new generation movies. In old cinemas, the producers had to mix some condiments to make good for the investment amount.Cabaret dance is seen in most of the olden movies starring Jayan,Nazir,Vincent,Sudheer,Soman etc.New cinemas don’t have much cabaret dance but still a lot of violence is shown.
Veterans like Adoor Gopalakrishnan,Aravindan,John Abraham,P.A.Baker etc have left their mark in the Malayalam Film industry.People dont rush into theatre to see their movies.Usually, inside theatres, we could see young people who resrmbled some intellectuals with long hair and long beard.Although the film world is dominated by the new generation,to the satisfaction of the intellectuals, once in a while a good quality movies is born, like the occasional downpour in a hot summer. The rest are all packed with sex and violence. Two films worth mentioning here are Sivaji(Tamil)And Alibhai(Malayalam).
From the facial expressions of the people who saw sivaji,it was clear that it was money well
spend.Although it was a big budget movie,it had neither a good storyline nor screenplay nor any immobilize his opponent. All the black money in the state is then converted to American
Dollar and brought back to the state itself and brings the state under his feet through Sivaji Fou
ndation and becomes the uncrowned king.Later he is took in to remand by the CBI and is killed under Police custody. He takes a rebirth .The story ends when he takes revenge of his
opponent.Such a story is not likely to happen in india or anywhere in the world. The producer’s
confidence to get good returns for his investment is reiterated here,no matter how the story is
told.Alibhai also belongs to the same generation with a lot of violence and dialogue delivery.sex, violence, heroic scenes or dialogues resembling verbal diarrhoea will not make a film great.
Today’smovies appear and vanish like the gamblers at the carnival. They may be there to attract people for a week or at the most two weeks.
Each actor has a Fans associaton. These Fans Associatons mostly maintain the cinema. The
association members will see the movie repeated, thereby managing to keep a long que outside the theatres, showing their loyalty towards the hero of the movie.
But the directors don’t have any Fans Associations. It was all in the golden times of John Abraham and Aravindan.Today the situation has changed.Today the Fans Association members spend from their pocket and repeated see the movie of their favorite actor, not caring whether it is a good movie or not.If the present situation continues like this,we may never be able to see a good movie again either in Malayalam or in any language. If the situation in Mala-
yalam film industry is so pathetic,it is better not to mention about other language movies.
Cinema is viewed as a big business where the businessman tries to recover the invested
amount through any means.Greedy persons are trying to catch the film appreciaters in their net
by packing condiments in the movie. The hunger for money is the only thing seen in cinema production today. If this situation changes, then malayalam movie might survive.
